The Hangman Art Gallery in Toronto's creative Queen East area is a beacon in the middle of a thriving community of visual arts professionals. Supporting a thriving fine arts membership and non-members alike, it is also a venue where artists from all stages of their career can showcase their struggles with the gritty realities of contemporary life.

Hang Man Gallery exhibits the work of emerging and established artists.

Our focus is to show the work of the highest technical and conceptual standards. Our gallery can be rented by members and non-members for a 3 week exhibit at an advantageous, cost-recovery fee, once submissions have been through a jury process.

 

Our Galleries

Feature Gallery
[ Members: $900 / Non-Members: $1200 / +GST ]
All artists can apply to exhibit in the large 16'10" x 37'8" space at the front of the gallery. One wall is red brick, one is a signature piece window, and the rest are white. In addition, 3-dimensional artists can opt for plinths in the open space.

Entire Gallery
[ Members: $1200 / Non-Members: $1500 / +GST ]
All artists can apply to exhibit in the entire gallery, which includes both the Members Salon and Feature Gallery spaces, allowing them an exclusive 3-week show.

Members Salon
[ Members: $200 + 25% commission / +GST ]
Members in good standing with the Artists Network of Riverdale can exhibit in the 7' x 14'6"  back gallery. There is an additional feature piece hanging wall of 4'. All walls are white. This is an excellent opportunity for artists of every level to show their work in a supportive environment. Want to see the reaction to new work, show existing work, or get used to even showing your work, its all good. The Salon is for members to have the opportunity to hang a show at a low cost.
 

Artist's Services

Included in the rental fee for the Feature and Entire Galleries are several advertising and opening night services:

  • graphic design of evite and 4" x 6" postcard
  • printing of postcards
  • opening reception (Thursday evenings only)
  • AKIMBO listing
  • publishing to all local PSAs
  • evite to gallery email database
  • sitting of gallery Tuesday-Sunday, 12-5pm (artist is encouraged to sit on weekends)

In the Members Salon  the artist is responsible for creating their own promotional materials, and promoting their show. No opening is supplied, though the Salon opening can coincide with the main gallery.
 

Artist Responsibilities

  • Artwork must be in gallery ready condition (no clip frames, wired and titled on the back)
  • The artist is responsible for shipping of artwork to and from the gallery
  • The artist is to take part in the installation of their show unless their location prohibits
  • Any special needs to display the work must be checked with the gallery before the exhibition is approved
  • The artist must be able to have their artwork on exhibit during the dates of  their rental timeframe and remove their work during the given time frame for removal
  • The artist should provide a bio, price list, and guest book for the duration of their show
  • The artist is required to provide a promotional JPG for the website and hi-res image for postcards (if applicable)


Additional Services

The gallery provides several additional fee-based services to the artist such as Saturday Opening Receptions, additional promotion to name two. Please consult the gallery for a list of these services.

The Artists' Network of Riverdale and the Hang Man Gallery offer both their member artists and submitting artists several options for exhibiting their artwork. Choice of gallery can be dependent on several factors, such as budget, space, length of exhibit, and included extras. In order to help you make an informed decision about which gallery to choose for your next exhibit, they are broken down below in a comparison chart.

Submission Requirements

Length of exhibitions: 3 weeks

Please include the following with your submission:

  1. Artist's Statement & Exhibition Proposal - your 1-2 page summary should include the following:
  • a description of your proposed exhibit including the number of works, the space required and any special installation requirements
  • whether you are a member of the Artists' Network of Riverdale
  • contact information, URL, and email or phone number
  • your preferred gallery (Main, Entire, or Salon) and dates - check the availability of your preferred gallery before submitting
  1. Upload or CD (if mailed) 6-8 images in digital format representing your proposed exhibit. Digital images should be RGD, JPG format no larger than 1024 x 768 pixels.
  2. Image List - All images should be numbered and labeled and include a corresponding image list indicating title, year, medium, dimensions, and price.
  3. CV - CV or biography of the artist(s).
  4. S.A.S.E. - A self-addressed enveloped with sufficient postage for return of materials if submitting by mail, unless the artist wishes to pick them up at the gallery. If you wish to submit by email, you may do so by sending your package to hangmangallery@gmail.com with "Artist Submission" in the subject line.

The Hang Man Gallery will handle all material with care. However, we are not responsible for loss or damage of material during shipping. All submissions are reviewed collectively by the Programming Committee on a quarterly basis. The Hang Man Gallery welcomes the opportunity to collaborate with other arts and community organizations. This form is used for submitting to the Hang Man Programming Committee to exhibit in Hang Man's Main Gallery, Feature Gallery, or Members' Salon. Please check the availability for the Hang Man Gallery space before requesting a specific month on this page

Your submission will not be processed until we have received your payment of deposit or submission fee.

Gallery commitments to Feature show includes : A three week show A two hour opening reception food and cash bar, Listing in Akimbo and free PSAs Design and print of postcards (extra paid by artists) Design of evite and inclusion on website.   • Cover letter of intent
  • Artist statement

BowsArt 2009 Gallery

The Artists' Network of Riverdale celebrates the holidays with its annual members' show featuring a variety of original artwork, from watercolour to photography to sculpture, priced under $500. Below is just a small sample of the varied and creative work that will be exhibited from December 8-24th. (More images to come.)

Thank you to all our members who submitted artwork to the Hang Man Gallery @ the Little Art Show. We are no longer accepting any submissions and all submitting artists will be contacted shortly regarding their submissions. We encourage all artists to continue submitting to our group shows throughout the year and are accepting submissions for solo and group shows on an ongoing basis for our 2010 schedule.

We look forward to seeing all the artists at the Little Art Show on November 14th.

 

Online Gallery Submission

Welcome to the on-line gallery for monthly exhibition featuring members' work.

You are able to up load a maximum of two images for exhibition and review. The top three artists will be part of a member show in Hang Man in the following January (i.e. 2012).

Come by and vote for the image and artist you would like to see in the gallery exhibition.
