Artist’s Statement Roderik Mayne When I start a new painting I look at the scene and try to pick out the one thing that strikes me. I then try to keep that in mind throughout the painting process. This is sometimes difficult as I get more and more distracted by details or less important qualities. I have to keep reminding myself of my initial impression and I have discovered that this impression most often has to do with light; a light patch on the sidewalk, a wet reflective roof against the sky, the play of light and shade on a rock. The basic depiction of light, it’s quality, its mood, its very presence, is most important to me.
